Sacramento County deputies are examining a gun violence incident that unfolded late Saturday at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area just as officers were dispersing a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
Background
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to Howe Park around 6:30 in the evening after learning of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Not long after, a follow-up call was made about a possible fight unfolding within the park grounds.
Aerial units scanned the area from the air but reported no active disturbance. Regardless, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Officers moved to clear the area by positioning themselves around the crowd and using their vehicle PA systems ordering those gathered to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were provided for people to comply.
At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots rang out. The sudden gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began searching for victims.
Four People Shot
In total, four people were identified as having gunshot wounds. The victims — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their early to late twenties — were brought to Sacramento area hospitals. Medical teams reported that two victims sustained immediate injuries, check here one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one suffered minor injuries. Thankfully, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire were called to the scene and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot on location.
Evidence at the Scene
The bulk of the shooting was believed to have happened near Cottage Way adjacent to the local Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. CSI personnel found extra shell casings scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were noted in the iron perimeter fence surrounding the Home Depot. The physical evidence pointed to that a shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was placed on lockdown during the incident. CSI units alongside detectives continued working well into the night.
Suspects Detained
Reports confirmed through scanner monitoring established that a Kia connected to the shooting was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four individuals were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video evidence revealed that two shooters had been involved.
